What if Quake had no medieval content?

John Carmack confesses that if he'd had the wherewithal - namely, more time and more artists - he would have abandoned all the levels created at that point, scouring Quake clean of medieval details. But Quake was already far behind schedule, and the artists weren't about to sacrifice months of precious work a second time.

There's no secret that Carmack just wanted to remake Doom, following his "porn movie philosophy". And TBH I would be OK with a Doom game with the idtech2 engine as long they would save the Quake idea to another moment.

im not sure if id like quake as much or even at all. i perfer quake 1 over quake 2 one because of gameplay and because quake feels original there are plenty of tech inspired shooters.

Carmack at his silliest. Quake would have been a commercial success, looking at what it was up against when it was released.
It wouldn't have been the rare masterpiece it was though. Also, there was plenty of medieval in Doom. Seriously, it would have been like Doom3 with Quake2's textures.
I think he should rethink his views on "story irrelevant, games as porn". That kind of thinking is fine for whatever cellphone game of the moment you make, not for when you are making masterpieces that people will keep coming back to.
