Quakewiki revival

Post by Spirit »

Hey,

as some of you already know, I have setup a new Quakewiki at http://quakewiki.org

It is based on the Wiki Sajt hosted at quakery.quakedev.com/qwiki which itself was loosely based on the wiki.quakesrc.org. Thanks to LordHavoc for providing the initial data dump! License is GNU Free Documentation License just as before.

The mappers at func started this initiative for documenting Quake properly once and for all (and seem to have shot their early energy): http://www.celephais.net/board/view_thread.php?id=60913

I am only acting as technical host, so even if you cannot stand me, please don't let that hinder you from using and adding to it. It would be great if discussion about the Wiki itself (what to move where, organisation etc) would happen right on the Wiki so there is not that mappers/modders/players divide on several sites. How the Wiki grows and evolves is up to the people using it.

The Wiki can use a lot of cleaning up and completing of half-done pages.

Some great fresh content are a Trenchbroom Quake mapping tutorial for newbies, a nice reference of QuakeC functions and also entity pages (check out random monsters).

Please remind me to automate dumps so the content is future-safe. That is the top priority for me. A XML dump for a couple of days ago is available at https://www.quaddicted.com/stuff/quakew ... 522.xml.gz

Don't ask for permission to do structural changes, but maybe post them as proposals on the Wiki first. Maybe check the history too. I am making anyone who needs it an admin user so they can work without annoyances.

The user accounts from Sajt's wiki were imported, so you might be able to log right in. Have fun!

Cool, definitly a very usefull resource.

Something that would really add to it would be a better documentation of the CSQC and general new coding styles because of that on Darkplaces.

Information on CSQC in general is quite scarce as far as I can tell, and when I recently compared the code base of Transfusion (q1 mod style) and that of Xonotic, I realized that all those nice QuakeC tutorials I had read make perfect sense on the Transfusion code, but totally fail me to understand what is going on in Xonotic.

P.S.: Really looking forward to be able to use Trenchbroom with an advanced DP game like Xonotic :)

Spirit, have you considered posting at QuakeOne asking for people to document CSQC?

I understand CSQC isn't an interest of yours (it is barely on my radar as well -- just because I worry about more pressing matters like bugs or functionality issues).

You might consider posting about the Quakewiki at QuakeOne and then ask Solecord to promote your post to "news" (which is just moving a thread into a special category in the forums).

Some of the DarkPlaces fanatics there would love something to do or a way to contribute back , especially in the CSQC dept or possibly QuakeC in general.

And I think the members that are not modding-literate wouldn't have much interest in the wiki, so you would not need to be paranoid about someone messing it.

One thought. But it might re-energize the wiki activity, the DP modding capable body count there is very high.
The night is young. How else can I annoy the world before sunsrise? 8) Inquisitive minds want to know ! And if they don't -- well like that ever has stopped me before ..

Thanks again for contributing so much to the community at large. I'll have to see what I can contribute WRT QC and friends in my free time.

Not my job. ;)

I really don't want it to be "Spirit's site #2" because I cringe every time people call Quaddicted that (it's wrong and wrong and wrong). The Wiki is up to the community.

Almost one year and contributions have been meager after the positive start. There is a lot to do, come procrastinate your other duties at it! ;)

I am posting to say that backups of the current setup have been stashed with LordHavoc and SleepwalkR, so if I ever vanish, it should be quick to revive.

just curious do you have all the same information & data as this wiki?

http://www.quakewiki.net/

it would be nice to get some kind of collaberation going if not. quake to be honest is from before my time on PC i started on half-life from what i can gather lots of things pertaining to quake and quake mods have been lost. it would be nice to get everything that we have now backed up somewhere permenant. iv been wanting to do something like this myself. but i lack the knowledge.

iv wanted to make a website (quakedb) that hosts everything pertaining to quake (2,3) but not only do i lack knowledge i lack funds. maybe one day. for now though a proper wiki i think is great!

quakewiki.NET and quakewiki.ORG are completely independent. From what I know .NET is not an actual wiki. Maybe Chip planned to do that but it does not look like it. .ORG is a re-creation/-launch of the old Quake Wiki(s) building upon their existing data.

That website idea sounds awesome, just my dream too. The problem is that if you want to do it in a proper "archival" way, it becomes a lot of work to design. The only reason why Quaddicted has no mods is that I don't know how to have a unified archive structure for ALL Quake files.

Frankly PlanetQuake had the best name for it, but IGN decided it was better to decimate a pillar of the game industry, gaming history, gaming culture, and internet culture for some redirects. That still makes me angry to think of.

Quake becomes rather vast when you dive into it, and that is if you stick to simply the original game. It doesn't surprise me that things are so splintered across sites, I know part of it is habit, and clusters of friends, but there are also so many facets to the game and enjoying it. I'm a Quake gameplay fan more so than a Quake technology fan, so these days I post more on Func_ because there is more discussion of ogres, nails, and megahealth versus coding (I'm pretty bad at coding).

Maybe I'll try to build a habit of spending some of my lunch breaks working on the wiki again. The real question there is which direction to expand in first... Documenting the maps? Monsters? Weapons? QuakeC? Community?
...and all around me was the chaos of battle and the reek of running blood.... and for the first time in my life I knew true happiness.

We need someone to port https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_Wiki:Privacy_policy for https://quakewiki.org/
Maybe even https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_Wiki:Terms_of_use ?

Alternatively someone who does not care about GDPR may take over. It's mediawiki with https://github.com/haleyjd/monaco-port on sqlite.

^ was done by Doom's awesome Quasar, I forgot to update the thread here. You can review https://quakewiki.org/wiki/Quake_Wiki:Privacy_policy

I just moved some pages from Quaddicted to QuakeWiki as that is the much better place for general Quake information. For example https://quakewiki.org/wiki/Easter_eggs and https://quakewiki.org/wiki/Timeline

It's the easter holidays, maybe you can also contribute or clean up something? The Wiki is still very rough and rarely updated, compare that to the amazing https://doomwiki.org!

For example there is an open request for a nice canonical link to QIP on https://quakewiki.org/wiki/Talk:Acknowledgments

https://quakewiki.org moved to a separate server for easier maintenance or takeover. Please report any problems.
