Registering on the Inside3D Forums Part 2: The Revenge
Registering on the Inside3D Forums Part 2: The Revenge
Dr. Shadowb0rg closed down registration for a while to prevent spam bots from registering. It was a good move, but it caused a lot of people who wanted to register to keep complaining to myself and others. So I'm trying something new.
The captcha is now a Q&A and the questions are Quake oriented. After solved, your account will be deactivated, pending approval by an admin (me). You will receive an email from me (Ryan Smith) with the subject line "Inside3D Forums". In the email I will ask you for your user name you attempted to register as, and a brief description of who you are. You should reply to this message with the requested details. If possible, link to posts you have made on other forums with the same name, projects you may have worked on, etc. Upon receipt of your response, and provided you seem like a person and not a robot, I will authorize you.
My time and availability oscillates quite frequently, so it can be up to a week before I get back to you.

That's great.
btw: Ruohis (the modeler) and Mr. Burns said they were going to sign-up today. If so, those are real ppl.

To sign into this site, go to your browser and do "CLEAR ALL COOKIES".
I could not log-in without doing so. And it seems you need to clear all cookies to log-in any single time.
In FireFox, this is via preferences -> Privacy -> Remove Individal Cookies -> Remove ALL cookies. I'm sure in the other browsers it is a somewhat similar deal, although I wonder how you do this in Google Chrome.
Fun!

Re: Registering on the Inside3D Forums Part 2: The Revenge
merely clearing cookies is not enough.
you must also apparently set your prefered language to en-us (en-gb will NOT work at the time I write this), and then you need to restart your browser or something stupid. *then* you can clear cookies before logging on, and you still get those annoying error messages.
which is a major pain in the arse, so if I don't post for a while, that's why.
edit: or just block cookies outright for the site. no need to faff around with languages then.

[EDIT] In Firefox, I allso had to set forums.inside3d.com cookies to "block".
Re: Registering on the Inside3D Forums Part 2: The Revenge
No way to login with Opera unless you block cookies (the session is handled with a session ID in the URL then). Does someone know what caused this poop? Forum software update?
edit: PHP update probably, it is PHP/5.4.10 now which is unusually uptodate for a Quake website.

I did a post with a raw ampersand instead of using &Spirit wrote:Does someone know what caused this poop? Forum software update?
Seemed like an innocent enough mistake at the time ...

Re: Registering on the Inside3D Forums Part 2: The Revenge
Man, what a PITA... I've been restricted to mobile access for about 2 weeks, and thus unable to login to this site because even setting Opera to block cookies wasn't working.
Judging by the drop of messages volume (noticeable even for the year season), a lot of people is having a hard time to login. Any idea when someone will fix this ?

I know FrikaC made a cgi-bin version of the quakec interpreter once and wrote part of his website in QuakeC

Re: Registering on the Inside3D Forums Part 2: The Revenge
I spoke to the atomicgamer guys and apparently the forum software needs to be updated (because they updated the server itself). By FrikaC or whoever can do that.

Re: Registering on the Inside3D Forums Part 2: The Revenge
Moving forward, what about a distributed/ redundant forum system, at least for archival purposes? If such exists (brute force: httptracker). A big part of it would be the user agreement, just to be up-front about it. Users agree to allow their posts/ images/ files to be archived and synced across server nodes. That requires a brand new forum I guess. I know there's some projects like this geared toward social networking, like buddycloud and diaspora.

Once I move servers I will setup automated monthly (or so) mirroring of active sites.
