Forum navigation

Post by Willis »

For the love of Shambler, somebody please put some navigation controls at the bottom of viewtopic_body.tpl.

I think its pretty standard that most people finish reading a thread at the bottom of a page, and having to go back to the top to do any navigation other than the browser's back button (which doesn't update threads marked as read without a refresh) is quite annoying. Logically (well, to me anyway), a topic reply button should also be at the bottom of the thread as well.

If nobody knows how I'd be more than happy to help, but judging by the description of the new forum registration requirements, I have a feeling somebody around here is capable ;)

Yeah, I keep missing that one since it is so tiny, I always have to double-check

More slow controls. The forum has fast navigation linking (as seen at the top of the page) that is much easier and much more efficient. The dropdown menu is only really useful if you want to jump directly into another forum category.

Page navigation within a single thread (IE, multiple pages in 1 thread) still require you go to the top of the page no matter what, which was my main complaint.

Yeah, all this forum needs now is the page navigation (next page, etc) at the bottom, otherwise you have to scroll up to the top when you're done reading a page to keep going.

The bit saying "Goto page Previous 1, 2" only appears on the top of the thread for me, using firefox. It would be nice to have it at the bottom, as that's where you are when you finish page 1.

Ah, I see it does show up at the bottom in IE, but not firefox.

Hmm, weird, I'm seeing it now in the My name is Inigo Montoya... thread, maybe I wasn't paying attention last time I checked. Never mind then.

I run a few phpbb boards, there's quite a number of useful addons.
QuickReply being one of the most basic and useful.

I'd recommend installing easy mod since it makes it a tad eaiser to install/uninstall mods without resorting to a text editor.

but mods would make this board harder to maintain and would destroy the (if-not already destroyed) retro atmosphere.

Not really. Infact, EasyMod makes updates and mod installations one click, and the mod itself is installer based ;) As long as your not a complete computer newbie which is a near impossibility on a site of this nature and are on top of what you've got installed, its trivial.

To install a mod with easymod just get the install.txt file, and hit process. It tells you exactly what its doing and you click next to apply. If you don't like it you click uninstall and it removes the changes.

I run some pretty hefty phpbb boards (which i won't post here since their content is probably against the T&C... no comment  ), but updating is pretty streamlined, that's despite all the many mods i've applied or made myself :) Its just a vi session once every other update.

Downloading the mod version of a phpbb update from phpbb.com, put it in admin/mods/update_to_version. Click "Go to Admin Panel" -> EasyMod, and then click process. Then you just run update_to_latest.php to update the phpbb database structure. Its essentially just like applying the linux patch file but from your web browser. if there's a clash, its a simple one line change in notepad / vi.

As for destroying the retro atmosphere, well that can be restored by totally cosmetic changes in templates if you so desire. I'd say its not necessarily a bad thing  Retro isn't particularly good, look at func_msgboard. Terribly designed and implemented site. No search, takes up 20% of your screen, etc. The persuit of retro is a dangerous thing.
