DarkWar - a very innovative project

Post by toneddu2000 »

I don't know if you guys are already aware of this amazing project, but, in doubt, I'll post the link.
http://svn.icculus.org/darkwar/
This is an awesome project made by LordHavoc and other few devs on the net from scratch (no Id/quake code connections).

Darkwar is an artistic-centric game engine. Creating a map is a matter of a couple of minutes: create from your favourite 3d app (blender,3dmax,maya) your map, save it in obj.file and export it. Create a properties text file linking the file and setting lights position and intensity and launch the engine. A (still incomplete) world editor will permit you to add models and entitities in realtime (!!) and ALL the lights (included sun light) act in realtime!

NO COMPILING TIME!

There is another cool feature that is the splatmap; basically is a very high (4096x4096px iirc) multicoulour texture (red, green, yellow, etc.)which represent the ground of the map; in the properties text file you can associate at every color a texture image and, ingame, you'll see a variety of ground texture mixing each other in a very smooth way!

Unfortunately the project is far from complete and a lot of important features are still missing (no sound, no physics, camera first person-third person switch seems buggy, realtime world editor not 100% usable yet, etc.) but the project is very promising

I had a little talk with LH about this project, first of all because I saw that was almost impossible to find informations about that engine that I thought he wanted to let the project development private, but he said that the development is not public neither private so it's not a problem!:)

I'd really like to know your impressions. IMO this could be a great engine (like cube engine but better imo for some aspects) for creative teams

also ,

http://darkwar.fleekyflux.com

as for the editor i dont think it can actually add things in yet, the most usefull feature the editor currently has is that it can sculpt any mesh, but i dont believe it can save those changes.

darkwar really needs some competent coders to jump in and help lordhavoc out, he can do all the coding himself but he doesnt have a lot of time, hence the need for help.

the engine is quite a joy to use.
