...And the Hell freezes over!
I know FrikaC made a cgi-bin version of the quakec interpreter once and wrote part of his website in QuakeC

What i've seen of its current incarnation judging by 'holy crap i played it i am a god' photo snaps, it's third-rate Halo. You even hold down buttons to pick up weapons on the ground.
We probably have a few PAX attendies from here to say some 'f you your wrong' or something. A Xbox360-designed title took away all the promised sophistication on gameplay I was looking forward to in 1997-2001.

i should not be here
Everything Duke3D had with many steps higher, on current technology. A Duke3D that's all 3D and has VEHICLES.
... no, it's "Half-Life with boobs".
I'll wait for Duke 5. I didn't wait 13 years to find another linear console game.

Actually, you waited FOURTEEN years.leileilol wrote:Everything Duke3D had with many steps higher, on current technology. A Duke3D that's all 3D and has VEHICLES.

I don't hold many hopes for this, too. It suffers of consolitis (health regeneration, you need to use buttons to pick weapons on ground, etc), and Gearbox isn't exactly the greatest game studio in the world to deal with the IP.

The 2001 E3 DNF would have been a classic (other than the talking NPCs).
I don't know why all these franchise reboots are always stuffed full of "nostalgic" references to the original, when nobody of the new audience will have ever even heard of the original. (This epidemic applies to all franchise reboots in films and games.) Why don't they just make a new game from scratch? It's like the game is so obsessed with references and send-ups that it forgets to be original.

F. A. Špork, an enlightened nobleman and a great patron of art, had a stately Baroque spa complex built on the banks of the River Labe.
Maybe because the core fanbase of the originals is the strongest source of word-of-mouth marketing they have. Deviate too much from the original, and this fanbase may feel betrayed; that's probably the reason.
However, I think that what is a true betrayal is twisting elements of the original, instead of not including those elements. For example, the first Resident Evil movie worked somewhat well because it was like a side story to the first game, while (imo) the second movie was a disappointment because they tried so hard to shoehorn the games' elements into the movie that they ended up twisting the story of the game.

Well that was unexpected.
So it's a shooting game with driving elements set in a post-apocalyptic landscape? Must be something in the water.
Whatever, I wish them well.

We had the power, we had the space, we had a sense of time and place
We knew the words, we knew the score, we knew what we were fighting for
We knew the words, we knew the score, we knew what we were fighting for
Sheesh, when did everyone become so jaded?

But yes, I am not looking forward to DNF, as supporting consoles means supporting their input devices, which means slowing down the combat, fewer vertical environments which means more two dimensional exchanges, more linear environments, and their incapacity to grow means lower variety of environments and/or lower monster counts depending on how much they're already taxing the systems.
Hell didn't freeze over with this release, Hell won.

...and all around me was the chaos of battle and the reek of running blood.... and for the first time in my life I knew true happiness.
I'm actually quite looking forward to it. I'm a mite cynical about the premise, and arriving in the same year as Rage means that there are going to be inevitable comparisons (like I said, mixture of shooting and driving, post-apocalyptic wasteland, etc etc etc), but done is done so far as that's concerned. I do wish that specific part of it wasn't happening as things are going to get a little tiresome, but overall Duke is one of the iconic franchises and it'll be good to have him back.
It certainly took some major guts on the part of Gearbox to pick up this title, so yes, I genuinely do wish them well with it. Negativity - well, let's see - it strikes me that the people being most negative about this are the same people who are generally negative about everything on here - like the recent "GPL Doom 3 won't happen" thing. So be it, some people are just like that.
Given the fiasco that has been DNF to date, even releasing the thing will be a success, but reading stuff on other sites gives a pretty clear indication that the Gearbox folks are determined to make this something better. So what if the gameplay style doesn't suit everyone - nobody said that studios HAD to make games explicitly for YOU. There are plenty of other options out there so pick one of those instead.
