What are you working on?
Re: What are you working on?
I made some neat little engine hacks to darkplaces to make quake a top down shooter.
Picture tells more than 1000 words, a video is literally more than 1000 pictures.

Personally I find the black-textured upper walls (I assume that's what it is) create a slightly weird effect when the player moves between rooms (the illusion is broken.) It might be possible to just use black textures for the outside of the map and put the entire level in a black textured box. That would allow the player to see the top of the wall, ie the walls could then have a visible thickness.

Of course it's a stylistic question.
Re: What are you working on?
Those walls might be meant as a trick to simulate line of sight shadows. Teleglitch is where I learned about that http://diemore.teleglitch.com/
In that game it works well due to wobbliness and low resolution, in the video by Shpuld I agree (omg, thrice!) that it looks weird.

Re: What are you working on?
Yeah, that part of it works to an extent, and most players might not actually notice it.

I know FrikaC made a cgi-bin version of the quakec interpreter once and wrote part of his website in QuakeC (LordHavoc)
Re: What are you working on?
nice quake would have made a fun top down game.
Re: What are you working on?
Thanks for the good feedback guys, I'll probably make the walls look similiar to the picture gb linked.
Re: What are you working on?
Shpuld: maybe it could be zoomed in a bit more.
And hey all, I've worked on some Quake stuff again, learned to use Blender some while ago, restarting my projects too many times.. uhh... Currently going for something pretty close to Abuse.

Cool, I was just looking for that feature in Quake yesterday. I was so sure it was there already, but I guess I was remembering some other game.

I like the murky water. Unknown depth. Goes well with the sky.
Re: What are you working on?

although instead of brick i think a darker concrete there would look better.

Re: What are you working on?
Thats looks really cool, I liked the black walls on the corridors, it felt like sight shadows. How does the mod cope with vertical height in maps when it is top down? Any plans to have alpha/transparent sections that phase in and out when obstructed?Shpuld wrote:I made some neat little engine hacks to darkplaces to make quake a top down shooter.
@leileilol, I like the last death cam with the slow movement upwards.
Here is a level design offcut ... a quick trip down the mine ...
