The defacto is still Hipnotic rotating entities (Scourge of Armagon).
It sucks, of course. Maybe it was an illusion to think that you could teach an old horse new tricks. There is not really a request from the mappers (there isn't even a "the mappers") for a hipnotic substitute. Quite the contrary ...

If you want a base code to get started with, I suggest taking a look at Urre's tutorials and some of the other aforementioned pojects like kleshik and nexuiz (though the latter may give you headaches). Also, CSQC GUI has a pretty solid base for a "Clean" CSQC kinda project..

A remake of Malice would be awesome, though it's hard to improve on the perfect cheese of the existing cut scenes. I thought that the QW source or some other source for it was released? Almost all of the half-life entities' basic functionality is no problem for standard quake engines. Quake-life supports as many functional entities as it can without needing some extreme hacks.
