Honestly, I think you're over thinking this. Removing all of that stuff from your mod would pretty much ensure that nobody would play it. Quake is so established at this point that changing the rules radically isn't going to lead to a lot of new players, IMO. You may want Quake to be more realistic,...

Multithreaded VIS for Windows
WVis is a modified version of Bengt Jardrup’s VIS tool. It’s the exact same program as the one you can get here… http://user.tninet.se/~xir870k/ …except that it has multithreading turned on.
