Free model sources / URLs

Post by Seven »

Hello,

I think it is a good idea to create a thread where we all can post sites/pages/URLs from where we can
download/use free models.
Models, that can be used in our own projects and are free to release (depending on the included license type/file).

Spirit had the idea and I would like to start with the ones I found in the last months/years.
Please continue / extend this list with your sources/URLs that you found.

There are really amazing beautiful jewels to be found...
(even already animated models/monsters can be found)

1.) http://opengameart.org/
2.) http://3dmodel.domawe.com/
3.) http://thefree3dmodels.com/stuff
4.) http://www.gfxmaya.com/category/3d-models
5.) http://www.psionic3d.co.uk/?page_id=25
6.) http://www.max-realms.com/modules/wfdownloads/
7.) http://www.md2.sitters-electronics.nl/

Sites where you need to register (but nothing more):
8.) http://www.sharecg.com/b/5/3DModels?PSI ... 090b242bac
9.) http://www.3dxtras.com/
10.) http://www.free3dmodelz.com/
11.) http://www.turbosquid.com/Search/Index. ... page_num=1

Kind regards,
Seven

3 and 7 are suspect (and 7 has a known history of stealing Deus Ex models then licensing them under the GPL). Beware of the abuse of the word "free" when it comes to the internet, there's very few trusted model sources than you think

http://blendswap.com

I should also mention very few are low poly, low texture and are even ideal for the MDL format, so... good luck finding something appropriate for Quake. You're better off learning to model low poly than to scavenge and scour.

If something is "free" and beautiful, chances are it's too good to be true and is ripped work from a copyrighted, commercial game.

What leilei says.

With for example a sword, it's not that hard to make one yourself - there are gobs of Blender tutorials on Youtube, several of them about how to make a sword.

It's 4 weeks of Blender practice until you can make a sword, tops.

A full game would need dozens of objects, plus several animated characters. For someone working alone, this can mean a few years of work.

Not only they're inappropriate for Quake but games in general. Most of the models sites seem to be toward the poser/daz crowd.

http://virtualworlds.wikia.com/wiki/3d_models_list

also iv converted warcraft 3 models to quake before, so you might be able to find some real custom models here too. although i dont know any of the rules for using them.

Yes, but how many people here make full games?

... and I thought these kind of posts only happen at quakeone.com. :(

Maybe people misunderstood this thread idea.
If you are a hero and dont need free models, that other people did, then this thread is not interesting for you.
But if you are looking for free models for your own project, then you can look into the linked pages.

Most of the linked pages are forums or galleries where hundreds authors themselve posted their work,
together with its license. You should of course respect these licenses.
If the license says: free to do what you want with it (which is for most models the case), use it.

I hope this is a bit clearer now.

Models are like textures, sounds or other code bits.
All of you use some of these as base of your own work.
So you should not start complaining here.
Thank you for your understanding.

Have fun,
Seven

also worth mentioning, if you DO use a "FREE" model with a license compatible with your project yadda yadda,
DO CREDIT THE AUTHOR OF THE MEDIA THAT U USE ;)

leileilol; how feasible is converting the low poly models to mdl? Is it easy-ish through Blender?
