Please help me in converting .max

Post by Seven »

Hello,

Great authors release great models in the internet to be freely use in other projects.
That is a wonderful thing and I found a few models that I would like to use.

Unfortunately some authors only use the 3dsmax format: .max
This format is locked to 3dsmax and no other program can open/convert it.

I have read that many of you have 3dsmax installed on your computers.
May I ask for a favor to convert a few .max models into a more common format ?
Maybe .md3 or .3ds or .obj or both ?
A format which 3dsmax can convert to...

I know that there is a limited trial version of 3dsmax available.
But this is almot 1 GB in size and it needs a 100 MB download-manager to be installed,
which I do not (only to be able to converting 4 files) want.

In case you want to help me, I attach the .max models below.

Thank you very much for your support and effort.

edit : wait you're asking someone to convert those pre-made models over to mdl? they seem to look a little high poly for swords + mdl.

Hello ceriux,

Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately you misunderstood me (most probably due to my bad english).
The format of these 4 models is .max
This format can only be opened with 3dsmax program, which is extremely expensive and trial is hard to install (see my notes above).

I do not want them to be converted into .mdl.
I posted in my link possible formats: .md3 or .3ds or .obj or both
The polygon count is no problem for these format convertions.

Sorry again for my poor english.
I would be very thankful if you or someone else (who has 3dsmax program) could convert them into any of the mentioned formats.

Thank you very much.

Doesn't Noesis work?

Also, could you share the links to those sources?

Hello ceriux,

Thank you very much for your help and effort.
The .3ds format seems to be the better choice (compared to .obj) when exporting in 3dsmax.
Your four converted .3ds models are really nice and I can work with them now in the standard model editors that I use.

Hello spirit,

As mentioned above, the .max format is not an open format. It is locked to autodesk 3dsmax program.
Noesis (as well as all other model editors) cannot open these.
That is why I am very thankful to ceriux, that he converted them into open formats (like .obj, .3ds, ...).
Those formats can be opened with almost every model program (Noesis too).

Regarding the sources and URLs for free models:
I would like to start a new thread in this subforum where all of the inside3d users can post / continue /extend the URLs, that I found in the last months/years.
So we all can benefit from each other.

Best wishes,
Seven

well yeah, all those kids pirate max at their own convenience so they don't bother to think about non-proprietary formats.
i should not be here
