Speedmodding Thread

And here is the speedmodding thread. Periodically a post will be made of the next event's theme, this will begin the planning week. You have 7 days to brainstorm on what you want to do, but please refrain from actually making anything during this time. After this week is the actual speedmod. The final day of this 7 day period is the due date, have your mod properly packaged, with a readme file and a naming scheme of sqc_theme_yourname such as "sqc_parasolwars_scar3crow". Email them in a common compression format to scar3crow at gmail by 11:59 PM PST.

If you need to require an accessible engine, do so, and document it. If you're using an existing code base other than a normal version of progs106, document it. Things such as Gyro, Frikbot, and the id map sources are free game, but please do give all due credit and use common sense.

Winner gets a free hug from a Frikbot, or a group hug from the Shockbots if you can convince Electro.

Theme for December 9th to December 23rd:

"Achievements"
Any sort of achievement styled system using quakec, such as analysis and reward for completing a level quickly, reaching milestones in a certain time frame, so many kills of a particular monster, so many style of kills (rocket midairs, two bounce grenade kills), distance ran, anything you can think of measuring, and a reward to compensate for it, either temporary or permanent.

Bonus points if you have stats persist across matches/maps!

Bonus points for animation and use of images (csqc comes to mind!)
That'd be the best way to go I reckon.

I can't wait to see some funny achievements. This could potentially give Quake a really big boost, I like this theme. I know there MUST be some achievement whores around here ;)

Shockbot don't play so nice atm, while hugging you they will slip a grenade into your back pocket and run away.

Anyone will participate in this one? I've got some ideas, but in the next week I have to 1) correct 500+ pages of papers from my students and 2) write my own papers, so I'm really not sure if I'm going to be able to code anything substantial... If anything, I'll start and release a little something after the deadline... :P

yes you can!

Ok here is my basic idea place a player in the middle of a map (Rocket Arena Style) and pull a robotron on his arse... increase the speed of the bot as the player gets from round to round. Each round is determined by time. Each round has a set # of robots .... :D

(me and my big mouth)...

You can make something like a quaker controls a turrent or something, or mak a pacman clone "quakman ", something like Sonic the quakehog

CocoT - Ask yourself, are your students grades truly as important as Quake? As a former student, with 19 years of Studenting under my belt, I can say firmly, Quake is more important.

Ceriux - You're more of a coder than I am, just keep it scaled comfortably to your level. Try and track a stat or three for an entire level, and reward the player as they meet a requirement in some way!

I hope to see some emails come the 23rd... If not, CocoT's avatar gets it!

And by it, I mean, a nasty photoshopping.

Seriously, lets see some QuakeC enthusiasm!

I started working on a little something, but there is no way I'll have it out on time :(
I'm pretty swamped, about to leave tomorrow morning for Chicago and on the 22nd for Europe...

I modeled a shoe and made a map of of the place where that reporter threw a shoe at George Bush. Anyone want them to make a mini mod? I don't know how to go about making it into a throw-able weapon and making it so the grunts don't run around. Let me know if you want to team up!

Well, despite all the great debate over the format of speedmodding, it has been a rousing failure, with no participation beyond st3ady's soleful efforts (ah, puns).

Nonetheless, hope against hope or whatnot, I shall post another speedmodding theme shortly, probably just after New Years.
