DJGPP usually comes with it. You're probably compiling code meant for the dos version

Ohhh, DPMI... Visions of black text mode screens and setting up my Sound Blaster parameters in environment variables or PPP connections and modem initialization strings just come to my mind... "ATDT", "AT&F", "SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6"... Life was really simple and fun, back then 
I know FrikaC made a cgi-bin version of the quakec interpreter once and wrote part of his website in QuakeC
