I agree with both Sajt and Baker.

I have always been of the opinion that the world would be a better place if all of the stupid people were lined up and shot. The problem is that this isn't pratical, and the depression comes from realizing they aren't like us.

And depending from our circunstances, those people may be seen as simple annoyances that need to get out of our way, or as problems that need to be solved because they aren't in our way - they are our way itself.

Let's just say that I've gone through 200 days from March of 2008 to March of 2009 without eating, and that after starving to near death, going almost batshit insane and losing a lot of my intelligence thanks to sub-nutrition, people started to respect me more and to give more value to my programming skills because I looked better, even though my programming skills got a lot worse.

When we are fully dependent on this kind of people Sajt is talking about, the only way out is to do as they please.

Baker: First of all, I actually just meant I was hungry for non-metaphorical food, not a couch being thrown at my face. But anyway, don't worry about me. By the time I was born I was already past most of those stages. I've spent at least 10,000 hours of my life programming things nobody has ever seen (or wanted to see when I've tried to show them), but I am even more driven now than ever. I'm not a revolutionary in that I'm not wasting sweat trying to convert people, but I fantasize about releasing something and suddenly the purity of it causes everyone to see the light (sure). The most "revolutionary" thing you could hope for is a total collapse of the video game industry, the end of multi-million dollar budgets (and the market/audience that supports them) and so on. If you had the sheer force of will, you could contribute to this through anarchy (economic or otherwise), but you'd still probably need a small army (and lots of your own propaganda). That's not my thing...

Also, for the record, the reason I haven't done much in Quake since 2004 is that I've found my true niche which is not augmenting, but making from scratch. At this point it's possible that I could release something significant in that field within six months, but it's improbable (well, this thing will most likely be done by then, but there will still be 1000 FIXME comments in the code). Unfortunately for Dr. Shadowborg, GoldQuake has gotten a total of about two hours of attention since I talked about it on this forum. With all the recent software-engine related things being posted on this forum, maybe I don't need to do it after all?

The "trojan horse" method, as I call it. Other people's perceptions are clouded by their expectations, it is easy to camouflage others perceptions by intentionally mimicking a prototype.
