Quake 2 player models

I'm curious about the creation of custom player models for Quake 2. Which animations are necessary? Any special steps? Where can i control the player model anims and how they work, or when they're played?
I'm used to the way i control animations in QC for Quake 1. Is Quake 2 similar? Which .c files should i mess with?
