reduce level of detail

how can i do this to make a model more suitable for the quake engine? go from say 2000 polygons to 500 or something like that?

Deleting polygons, welding/merging vertices.. then you'll also need to edit the texture coordinate map, because it probably got holes.. Don't trust automated polygon optimizers...
