I'm not decrying anyone's efforts, but I've never been able to see the point in re-making Quake. All that effort, all that skill and creativity for something we've already got...
I'd rather people spent the time making mods, meself. Not that I've spent five minutes modding lately, but; as I say, not as I do
I'd rather encourage people to buy it, you still can.
Yes it's getting more difficult, and I wish id would have a download version to buy, just to make it easier.

by the way.. since texture names/sizes & entities are in the GPL .map sources.. aren't them GPL'd?
You are correct, there is no particular reason technically that I had to do that to the maps. I have plenty of time to think about that.

Actually, they do http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quake/q ... ection=buy
To my knowledge it:
1. Doesn't include the sound track
2. Is more expensive than Ultimate Quake, the Quake 1 + 2 + 3 package that I think has the sound track.
3. Should be $15 instead of $20 according to a news item from last year.

Because its the internet and people will do things when they think others arent watching anymore? Generations caught legal attention when it was new because the game was new, and thus popular, and so the legal powers caught wind of it. Nowadays no one would.
Exactly the same way that Alien Doom was Foxed, yet you can still download it there. The internet doesnt have a Only Legal Items checkbox.

Actually, no. The "legal action" was about their previous mod for Q2, where they were just using the old models from other games. They sent an e-mail to id asking about eh legality of the mod and were told that it wasn't.
Generations Arena doesn't need to do this because many of the player models are already styled to look like they are from the previous games. And the other models are made from scratch.

but anyway: remakes of Quake's original textures/models for use with the original Quake game shouldn't be illegal since you still have to buy/own the game to use them.
so you could pack an open source engine + recompiled GPL maps and provide link to reworked textures in the readme.txt.. this way your package is all GPL and the standalone separate textures aren't illegal in no way whatsoever since it's not included in the GPL package.

if id software would be so nit-picking they:
- wouldn't have released the sources for everything in the first place
- would have sued the makers of Generations Arena (for Q3) & Generations (for Q2) a long time ago
- would have sued MVDSV makers for making their server have an auto-download feature of maps which allows to download maps not included in the shareware version (this is debatable)
plus: look at Quake2! it still has some retail copies in stores, but you can play the multiplayer for free just by downloading Quake2 demo + 3.20 patch. if id software would care that much it wouldn't allow such a thing to happen.
on the other hand Quake1 has no retail copies in stores (just rarities on ebay or so) and has engine & map sources released..
Yea guys. We must try to do the correct thing. Then don't care. We hare not lawyers. So once we try to good thing, we must wait, If theres a error somewhere, we must remove download links.
