Quake Online
Does anyone else here still play it?
Im often on quake.shmack.net:26002 with Sajt, Lardarse and Monster... but it has really strucke me that Ive never played anything with a number of you guys, and only a little bit (Storm the Castle) with the others.
Why the hate for online play? Its part of what makes Quake Quake!

Well I hardly consider Sajt or Lardarse to be confined to either group.
Though in all honesty, I dont care who I play with in a pickup match. And Ive worked at not forming negative associations with any community, even though I may dislike ProQuake, and I really dont like the graphical stylings of many of the QW community...
Still, there are plenty of people in #qc, and Ive had the topic there for a while be an encouragement to play, yet no one ever does. Sajt and Lardarse are the only people who I can actually get to come on to a server. I think I might begin once more with the random badgering of people to play.

Generally everyone gets sub 100 ping on shmack02 which is where we usually play, with the exception of the past few days Sajt has been having a funky 150 ping there, dont know why.
Ive actually played at least one Quake match a day for the past several days, relying on Lardarse, Sajt and Monster for such. I could probably bug Tical if I wanted to be utterly destroyed...

I got 70 ping, same as scar3crow , until a few days ago :/
I hope it resets on March 1, I'm not running anything and I have rebooted my computer... 150 ping is really tough.

I hop online once in a while, not very often though. I like playing on IHOC, cos it has a good mod, as opposed to the one on shmack which took that mod and ruined it. Unfortunately, there are very few people on IHOC, ever, if any.

FrikaC - Understandable. It would be neat to play you sometime though, my only encounters with you have been your barrels and ballistas in StC
Spirit - quake.shmack.net:26002 is "Practice Mode", the modifications are players start with all weapons and RA, and it relays to you your opponents health on your death or shortly after damaging them. You can also change the map, as long as its an id map - otherwise it defaults to dm6. So its kind of Vanilla, but not quite. Id like to play Vanilla but I dont know of a Vanilla server I ping at as well (shmack02 gets me 70ping continually.
neg!ke - Understandable again, though DPs nq netcode works just as good as QW for me.
Entar - Yeah Ive still got the scoreboard shot from the one random time we played on IHOC. Youre better at Quake than I anticipated. Try shmack's other ports, only the default one is the botched RuneQuake.
I just think were all kind of missing out on one of the golden aspects of Quake, and trading it for... idling on irc. Heed the #qc topic I set, please. Trust me, it is fun.

Yeah, it's that modded runequake crap. But who knows, it might even be fairer that way. It's still frustrating though.
scar3crow - DP's nq netcode only kicks in if it's a DP server

Umm, no, DP's DP netcode kicks in if it's a DP server. DP has enhanced code for playing on NetQuake servers, for smoother play, afaik.

That's not netcode though, netcode usually refers to the actual protocol...
DP does have some fancy client side code, and is probably 'smoother', but no less laggy when playing on NQ servers

Ah, well, cheers to shmack then for being a decent server anyways. Though DP converts do speak of how much that additional smoothness on the client end helps. Monster is strictly DP now, and Baker is at least non-hateful to it. It does help take the edge off.
