Anyone have experience with 3D printing?

In anticipation of obtaining a 3d printer this holiday season, I was checking to see if anyone here has any experience with them.

I plan on printing possibly all of the quake models eventually... So I basically want to know how hard it would be to convert MDL files to a 3d printable file format (stl).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Blender exports to stl too..
Anyway, more important, imho is to check how to create a new printed 3d model, shapeways gives some knowledge, most of all about carving hollow 3d figures. I'm completely ignorant about 3d printing but *I presume* that's better to recreate from scratch a nice topology, quad faced 3d model that need tob 3dprinted, instead of converting a normal, trifaced and lowpoly (if you talk about mdl files I suppose they are low poly) model that, probably, would look orrible once printed.

Anyway, very nice idea to have a little funny shambler stomping on your desk! :)
