Guess they are not going to do any mindblowing games anymore then :( sad indeed.

Atleast we can look forward to homeworld remastered :) should come out in the next month or so.
If you newer tried it go for it :) at its time it was known as the best space RTS ever made, some say it still is.
The story is also pretty good, and theres loads of it hehe.

So, official trailer is out.

I don't know what to say. It doesn't looks bad, but looks too similar to Doom 3 (with more wide open areas though) to my taste.
It's like someone trying to make Brutal Doom in Doom 3. Also, QTE-like slowndowns when switching weapons (clearly a console-oriented "feature").
The player uses some kind of robotic armor (wtf?), Halo-style. :/

OTOH the SnapMap tool sounds interesting.

well..well..I really don't know what kind of impression it made on me.
Cool things first(KEEPING IN MIND THEY HAVE 1 YEAR LEFT TO FIX THINGS THAT DON'T WORK):
  1. Only Id Software can make enemies feel "pain" when shot. That's for sure
  2. Unbelievable amount of detail on skeletal and static meshes (does anyone see a pointy triangle somewhere? :D )
  3. Better chainsaw of history. If it really can divide monsters following mouse coord (I mean, even Unity can do it...)it's a GREAT fun
  4. double barrel gun in its magnification!
  5. Hellish environments have now original Doom objects, like corpses with spikes through them, skulls on door portals and stuff like that! +1
  6. Old school physics, jump and run are more "unrealistic" just like Doom - apart from "impact compensation" when player jumps from heights..ugh
  7. It's doom! Better, DOOM!

Not so cool things:
  1. Time slowdown when weapon switch - yuck! Fortunately I heard it's an option
  2. Some weapon, like the machinegun doesn't seem to have a true "personality"

Things I didn't like
  1. Melee cut scenes.. really? Where's the option to disable them, please?
  2. Again claustrophobic environments? But wasn't Doom2 set on Earth? I'd have preferred this environment, but, of course it's just my point of view
  3. Something odd I can define.. it's like I was viewing a console game rather than a modern version of all fps games father.. but maybe it's just an impression or maybe this is due to Bethesda having swallowed up one of the greatest gaming company ever..
  4. Thing that really left me astonished: monsters don't seem scary at all! Imps (or whatever are they) seem puppets respect of Doom3 ones or even original Doom ones! Revenants, with that stupid jetpack, seem flying baloons that dismember humans..ooh, so scary! The Mancubus.. bleah.. better Doom3 one! Big monster at the end of second gameplay video ..a chihuahua it's scarier!
  5. Monsters sounds don't convince me AT ALL (but, again, they have 1 year to balance things)

It seems to me more like an armor, but I could be wrong

The QTE-like pause to switch weapons is clearly a concession to consoles. Let's face it: they are, again, making a game primarily for consoles, PC is just a bonus. Period.
I hope they keep the support to key bindings and maybe faster swap animations, because dodging projectiles while alternating weapons is one of DOOM primary game mechanics.

I liked both shotguns and the chainsaw is awesome (slowness apart), but the plasma gun looks "meh" to me.

Overall I don't like they following Doom 3 artistic direction regarding weapons and monsters (I hate how the Hell Knights looked on Doom3, and they are basically recycling it, same to the weird Doom3 Cacodemon). Again, maybe trying to cater to the younger console audience who probably never played the original game, but if so it's a wrong move IMHO.
They risk not bringing this market share and also losing the oldfarts like us.

The fatalities will be optional according an interview post presentation.
I am OK with the environments, of course they could use more colors and not be so linear (according the interviewed, the base walkthrough takes place in the second map, and the Hell location belongs to a map in the middle of the single player campaign). Sincerely I was hoping to see some homage to the original E1M1, but oh well.

  • Unfortunately, as I said: Bethesda is more interested in bringing the console audience to the franchise. If this means butcher the original canon and gameplay, they are willing to do it, screw the rest.

  • This, and the fact you don't see almost nothing that actually associates the game theme to Hell actually (maybe trying to avoid the polemic the original game brought back in the nineties). Most of the time it's generic zombie shooter #37 with the occasional pentagram here and there.

Actually, IMHO the secret sauce to a perfect DOOM remake is just imagine it as a Sam Raimi movie. DOOM is nothing more than Evil Dead in space: it cannot take itself seriously.

I really don't want to start a debate on a videogame (let's dibate about serious things) but I don't think Doom / Doom 2 had ironic atmosphere. I always preferred them to Duke Nukem (even consider duke a milestone in game history and really fun to play)because the sense of oppression and "no-irony-at-all" was dense in every level. Apart from eastern eggs, that made the tension lower a bit, every second spent in those corridors was a mix of adrenaline and fear/sadness (maybe thanks to omg soundtrack). Same story for Quake. But in Doom I always had the perceftion to be alone out there and every angle could have been the last deathly one.
    Am I a psycho, am I?

Then I suggest you to watch the first Evil Dead (nor the remake or Evil Dead 2, the very first version) to understand what I meant. It's an over-the-top terror movie without any intention to be funny or ironic (although I agree it borders the ridiculous sometimes). Both DOOM and Quake were strongly influenced by this series BTW (IIRC the player pain sounds in QTEST1 were actually from Ash's grunts).

No no I remember it! I remember watching it with the sound off and be proud of it with my friends when I was 13!

    Didn't know that! Cool!

little off topic: I've never heard about qtest1 before so I search over the net and I found this. Wow!

Ah i remember that one :) great times.

Consoles are pretty much the mainstay these days, allmost makes one feel the urge these companies have to return to the days of non disclosure and only for X companies hardware eh :P ?.
Dumb thing about it is that hardware wise the consoles are pretty much 5 to 6 generations behind current PC hardware,
but they are easier to develop for because said hardware rarely changes at the same pace a PC's hardware might.

As for the game, ill reserve my critic for when i tried it myself ;) but you bring up valid points non the less.

P.s toneddu what do you think about homeworld then ? :)

Hehe evil ash allways cracked me up xD the original movie was actually quite good effects aside.
I actually liked the whole evil dead series :) granted as a horror movie it was not so good, more of a parody but it brought a smile to my face.
Theres even a evil dead game but it has some rather annoying bugs (back from the days where console ports where complete crap) it was made by THQ and was called evil dead regeneration.
If you could actually get it to run it was quite funny.
(mentioned bug caused the keyboard and mouse to lock up if you followed the on screen message saying to hit enter to play, you need to use the spacebar instead to avoid that).

do you guys think it could make sense to add a poll to the thread asking some opinion about all the material we saw of new Doom?

P.s toneddu what do you think about homeworld then ? :)
Well, I am definately not a RTS guy, but, in front of homeworld, hands up! :D It seems that they preserved original gameplay but with flaming hot graphics / fx now!
