Modders are their own audience. Just like a musician doesn't need an audience to enjoy their music.
It is nice to have your mod played though. Plus the more players exposed to mods, the more budding modders there are likely to be.

As annoying as it may be, I'd say it wouldn't hurt if people were to post updates of their mods at moddb.com - despite the lame "haha, Quake is so old" comments. At least it would get the mods more exposure.

I agree with skinnedalive to a certain extent, not too sure about the moddb point though, 'cause I never go there anymore these days.
I'd say inside3d's main frontpage, quaddicted, qexpo, func_msgboard, and dare I say it even maybe planetquake probably do more for quake and it's mods exposure profile than anything else.
Something that would definately help the exposure rate, would be a re-release package for full quake at like bargain prices and / or some sort of free true to quake openquartz type standalone thing.

Your projects need to "escape" the forums to frontpages of the various newssites. That's the only way to get attention of "outsiders" I think. And that is a problem. As much as I like posting news about something released/discussed in the forums, I never know if I get too much of this rather "intimate" community to the outside (ie if you wanted to get this out to the people or if you wanted to keep it rather private).
(Another reason why I want to make the new Quaddicted.com more open to visitor-newsposts...)

I've begun a number of attempted replies to this, but I'm too tired - quickly and simply though the solution is:
advertise!
Now the best way I reckon is movies - they can reach people who may not still have Quake installed, can show exactly what your mods all about and is your chance at impressing people.
Then email Jube at PlanetQuake, post here and at moddb, and at the other Quake sites - and you'll reach a large enough audience.
Movies. Repeated 'cos I waffle.

As a mapper, I guess the audience impact maybe a bit different than for a code modder. For the Winter/Norway pack I participated in and my single map released in '04, I got a steady stream of positive e-mail for a few months after those projects were released. I've never asked him, but my pal Kinn probably got tons of that kind of stuff after releasing Marcher.

Ajay: that's a pretty awesome idea. Nehahara's audience base likely expanded by a few tenthousand on the merits of the 'Seal of Nehahra'
machinima alone. I would expect the model work of any current production that is likely to succeed would have to be of a hicher quality than stock Quake though.

An my engine used to have 600 users, I guest DarkPlaces will have like 30.000, maybe. (I creat this numbers from my ass, anyway).
