Beautiful .lit maps

Post by leileilol »

Know of any?

And I mean BSP29 + lit file, none of this halflife shite

Yeah I am aware of MHColour but what I want to check out are maps that really (ab)use colored lighting in their design.

Here's a little test map I did a while back for testing light properties in qflight. It doesn't make heavy use of colored lights, but it happens to be moderately playable as a small deathmatch map.

gb is doing some gorgeous-looking stuff.

It's using the RMQ BSP format but the basic principles can apply to any engine or format.
We had the power, we had the space, we had a sense of time and place
We knew the words, we knew the score, we knew what we were fighting for

Any that abuse the color green?

I'm looking for the fruity kind of lighting ala Unreal, basically 'ugly' lit maps that don't even dare respect the Quake palette

i'm just curious how bad it'll fringe in a 8bpp renderer :P

Romi's rtlights for Quake have a lot of green on E1M1 in the last 1/3 of the map.

I don't remember which level it is off-hand, but one of the upper paths in my map takes you to the GL, which is lit with a green spotlight. I think it's the very top (there's a small platform elevator in the tunnels clockwise from the waterfall room).

BTW, did you find the quad and pent? :)

Your renderer's done quite a nice job on the lava room :)

Yes, but it looks overly bright considering there are just a few candles.

Torches, actually. It's hard to see from that perspective, and the default torch models suck. The shot isn't the best example of intense coloured light though.

The thing is that the light gets clamped at 255, so if any coloured lights go above that, very weird stuff can happen to the colour of your wall textures.

Ricky's e2m1rq has pretty intense orange-ish lights, and Altar of Storms has those greenish-blueish ones.

Abuse of coloured lights, like what leilei is looking for, is usually stigmatized among level designers though so you're unlikely to find it in anything by high profile Quake mappers.

I suggest creating a testmap, quite simply.

TomazQuake had a zoo/example/test map iirc. It had really funky rainbow colors.

"Fantasy in Olive Green" The Quake palette is pretty big on blue, yellow, and two slightly different shades of lavender for some reason, but is giving up only weak baby-food peas green that is perfect for snotty slime and dead moss but not that nice lime radioactive glow.

Try LordHavoc's Entitytest map: http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/ ... tytest.zip

Also good for seeing how well you cope with moving sky brushes and many many instances of the same mdl.
