Can't a good captcha be implemented? Create 5 random questions about Quake and be done with it.

What I do at RMQ forums is ask a security question the first 3 times someone posts. Something quake-related that requires light googling, if at all.

It seems phpBB 3.0.6 and up support ReCaptcha. That should also stop most spammers.

Took care of some more - understand that if you respond to them, your posts will remain. The consequences are you will look like an off topic sillyhead. Please don't respond in their threads.

Definitely a eurasian botnet. i've only seen indian, russian, polish spam, might have something to do with this

the sad thing, it started off with cp spam..... and being paranoid, I disable images before visiting this forum until we get a better captcha

banning 173.234.*.* may help a little, granted it's not the only range but it's the majority of what i've dealt with
i should not be here

FFS, where are the admins? There's new mass spam every day but no solution in sight and no real countermeasures against the clutter. What about temporarily disabling user registration until the captcha issue has been sorted out?

The admins are here, and the reason why you are seeing at the least different spambots - because the old ones are being killed.

I'll discuss disabling user registration for a week or two with Error as he is the most reachable, but it is not the sort of decision I will make by myself, as it is not my forum.

User registration disabled, ~1600 users deleted (criteria was 0 posts, bots with posts get deleted within 48 hours).
