Found it! Thanks for suggesting the way back machine (web.archive.org).
Now that I'm reading it though, it's a horrible tutorial. One of the first steps simply has you paste several pages of code into the bottom of world.qc, with no explanation of what the code actually does. Durrrr... That was dumb of me. It's less a "tutorial" and more instructions for implementing the feature into quake. Plus, the first paragraph is a lie -- 5 easy steps my ass... try 17. Younger me, you're a retard.
Oh well. Ostensibly they work, and I'm happy explaining what's happening better to anyone who wants details.
Does anyone want the .doc file sent to them? I don't think these forums allow attachments.
(it's .doc so I could color-code text)

When my computer inevitably explodes and kills me, my cat inherits everything I own. He may be the only one capable of continuing my work.

Sorry for the double-post. I've tested the experimental method I brought up earlier, and it works wonders! I've posted a new tutorial here.
There's a couple of bugs though that are bedeviling me. It's late and I'm tired, so I'll have to get back to them later, but I'd love for feedback and suggestions about why player corpses aren't gibbable but monsters are.
Time for sleep...
