Using other's textures?

Postby blubswillrule » Sat Mar 19, 2011 4:26 am

I want to hear your opinions on this.

Is it better to use free textures (for example from cgtextures.com), or is it better to use your own homemade textures?

For me, I don't feel right using others' work (specifically graphic-wise), even if they have granted permission, maybe it's just that I over-pride myself on making everything I make homemade.

But for some reason, in my mind I consider it cheating to use those textures, because here I am, trying my absolute hardest to make good-looking textures, and there they are *type, *type some more, *see one they like, *download.

I don't know, obviously it makes sense for people who aren't exactly artsy, but what do you guys think?

Would it be better to make your own textures or to nab em' from a website?

just curious on what people think, haha

well, i suppose cgtextures could help people trying to make photorealistic texture. they would more or less just edit them.

Dont try to be the 'all by myself' mentality, in game studios you want to be team friendly. Depends what role you want to take with your project.
The only cheating is learning to make the assets yourself, but if that's not your goal, then use media from open channels. Though, you want to make sure the textures work together. Not all mixed up in different styles.

make everything yourself and you'll be stuck making everything instead of releasing it.
you want a consistant apearance if you want a consistant mod/game/etc, then using third party textures is often counter productive, but it can greatly save time where textures do match the theme.
just make sure the licenses are all compatible.
