A legal option is Shareware Quake from here: ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake/quake106.zip

This is only the first episode (about one quarter of the game, no deathmatch maps, several missing models) and is for MS-DOS so you'll need to use something like DOSBOX to install it.

But yeah, nobody's going to tell you where to download the full game for free. It may be an old old game but it's still illegal. I say you should at least consider buying it - it not like it's expensive or anything.

If you have to ask about getting the source without using the search engines for the obvious... you are wasting your time and you probably won't know what to do with the source anyhow.
