Inside3D Special Features

We are taking requests for special features for the new site. Anything that would make your life easier as a modder. We already have a few neat things in the works. Things like a QC PasteBin.

Request away :P

A pretty hat and no flash
F. A. Špork, an enlightened nobleman and a great patron of art, had a stately Baroque spa complex built on the banks of the River Labe.

How about a repository for new models and skins? They're always handy if you're no good at making your own.

Extremely good idea :)

Also an extremely good idea

Though both would benefit well from people being able to put them up without having to bug an admin overmuch.

I'd like to see more info and accessories gathered to just one spot for easy access, so Cheapy's idea about model and skin repository sounds awesome, sounds and textures wouldn't be half bad either. And I'd like to see the wiki to be integrated with i3d rather than quakesrc. Either that or massive pimpage and linkage to it, since you can never have too much modding info. On the subject of easy access, it's way too common that it's tough to start out in a community where everyone already knows everything, so there are no beginners guides, or they're hard to find and you have to put bits and pieces together from everywhere to understand things, so something like that'd be cool to see too. Even if the wiki is awesome, it's more like a database than a "to start, click here" kind of thing.

Whoa, I just now noticed that it was Quake Matt who said that thing about model and skin repository, not Cheapy. The fact that there is (was?) such a thing on Cheapy's site must've confused my tired mind.

A beginner's guide? That just about the level I could manage, I think! If nobody's working on one when I've finished some of my current stuff, I could probably give it a go.

Also, I'm sure it's been said before, but a mod database would be nice. I know we've kinda got ModDB, and there's countless FTP sites around, but they always feel diluted, out of date or awkward to use. BeyondUnreal's FileWorks is a great example of how to do it right - any chance of something like that?

I would tend to agree. While we do have ModDB, moddb tends to contain far too much other stuff. We probably should have a mod database for Quake dedicated to Quake exclusively.

I'm not sure we have this thing called "unlimited space" but I'll look into it.

Ask Echon for a file mirror on Quakedev and host the QuakeDB on I3D, perhaps? I'm not sure if he has the space for such a thing but it couldn't hurt to ask..
