Re: O-T Linux Help - drive cloning

I'm way late to this show, but I would make one suggestion; don't use Ubuntu as a server OS. I know, they have a server edition, it's super "easy" to use, etc, etc. My professional career involves working with a lot of different Linux and Unix based servers and desktops, and in every singl...

Re: Quake MDL vs MD2...

dpm as a format is pointless. its advantage is its obscurity, but that's basically it. use iqm. iirc, exporters for this format are somewhat compatible with halflife's smd stuff, so you may find it easier to export to if that's the you're already familiar with that (not a contradition: toolchains o...

MD5 treats all polys as double sided? That is a pretty odd thing, no normals, considering normals are a major part of a 3D mesh... Thanks for that info.

Re: mdl, md2, md3, dpm, iqm, etc... Optimal model format.

... If you export your model as FBX, you could import it in Blender, export it as iqe and then edit it as you wish... Where does one find this FBX importer for Blender? I have searched for the last 30 minutes, and every where I have been says there is no FBX importer for Blender. A link would be fa...

Re: mdl, md2, md3, dpm, iqm, etc... Optimal model format.

Whatever works is the best format for you, but I have to say that you seem very set in your ways and expect new stuff to work with what you're currently doing (the SMD thing). This reminds me of mappers unwilling to give up Worldcraft when there are clear benefits to doing so. Maybe you should just...

Re: mdl, md2, md3, dpm, iqm, etc... Optimal model format.

Further experimentation has shown me that the path of smd to iqm is not working so far. There are some significant problems with the ability of iqm.exe to properly compile smd files in to an iqm model file. Smd files that work fine with Half Life 2, and Darkplaces dpm compiler, do not work with the ...

Re: mdl, md2, md3, dpm, iqm, etc... Optimal model format.

of course it wasn't my intention to force you using Blender! :) Iirc Noesis can't import dpm so it could be a problem. I'll check tonight a rather simple process Keep in mind that, if fbx export is done well you should not suppose to learn Blender. Just open it, import fbx and export it as iqm/iqe....

Re: mdl, md2, md3, dpm, iqm, etc... Optimal model format.

I'm familiar with Blender, and to this point I have been trying hard to not start a "my 3d suite is better than yours" pissing match. To be blunt, I do not like Blender. Yes, I have used Blender many times over the last several years, from early versions to current versions (last version I...

mdl, md2, md3, dpm, iqm, etc... Optimal model format.

So, what is the optimal model format, that balances work flow, features, and compatibility? It seems most people think iqm is that beast, however I am not so sure. I have hit a point where I am comfortable sticking to Darkplaces as a mod platform because I like the .dpm model format, and the work fl...

Re: What are you working on?

The source to valves mdl compiler is readily available to see how they work with smd files, etc... <snip> I would love Quake engine projects to support Half Life mdl files, but none do. The major problem with that is Valve's SDK license. It's just not possible to build on anything using code, info ...

Re: What are you working on?

IQM is a drop-in replacement for .mdls in every engine that support it, including DP. Same as .dpm. Really though, .framegroup files are there to fix omissions in imperfect formats rather than a real feature in their own right. You shouldn't and don't need to use them when you're using IQMs, which ...

Re: What are you working on?

...Like that mod on here a while ago that used dpm+framegroup files. If it had used iqm instead of dpm, then it would not have needed the separate framegroup files and would supposedly have been able to run on DirectQ, RMQE, FTE, and presumably soon QuakeForge in addition to DP. However, it uses an...

Re: What are you working on?

My problem with Darkplaces atm is performance - FTE and RMQE run circles around it. what So what is with the apparent hate on for DP? I think its great to work with. DP supports more modern model formats, is easy to work with, runs well on Windows and Linux... Lots of nice QC extensions... I'm not ...

Thanks. They're dpm format; actually they started out as Half Life 2 mdl's, made for a different project but never used.
